Huntington Beach, Calif. (Sept. 22, 2007) --- Competing together for the first time, Southern California residents Jeff Carlucci and Ty Tramblie teamed up top capture the men’s open division at the inaugural U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball, presented by Corona Extra, defeating David Fischer and Russ Marchewka 24-22, 21-14 Saturday at the Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, Calif.
In the women’s open division, Pat Keller, of Cardiff, Calif., and Valinda Roche, from Huntington Beach, Calif., made it a double championship for Southern California, defeating Tarin Keith, Santa Ana, Calif., and Kathrin Winkler, Huntington Beach, Calif., 21-18, 21-11 to take home the women’s championship.
Carlucci, of Torrance, Calif. and Tramblie, from Newport Beach, Calif., advanced from Friday’s pool play as the No. 8 seeds and took out the top seeds of Michael Bruning and Pepe Delahaz, both from San Diego, Calif., in the quarterfinals, winning 19-21, 21-14, 15-8. Behind some strong athletic play from Tramblie in the semifinals, they advanced to the championship match after ousting the No. 4 seeds, Adrian Carambula and Marcos Macau 17-21, 23-21, 18-16.
Fischer, of Venice, Calif. and Marchewka, from Costa Mesa, Calif., eliminated the No. 3 seeds, from Florida, Tyler Lesnecki and Jeff Soler in the quarterfinals in three games and had an easier time in the semifinals, taking out the No. 2 seeds Art Barron and Anthony Mihalic 21-18, 22-20.
“We faced some tough competition all day long,” Tramblie said following the match. “It seemed like it never let up and there were several times we thought we were out of it only to find ourselves right back in the match. It’s pretty cool to be the first winners of the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball.”
Keller and Roche came to the event to play in the women’s masters draw, but found themselves in the Open Division and are glad they did. Entering Saturday as the No. 7 seeds,
they took out the No. 2 seeds, Jenelle Koester and Janelle Ruen in the quarterfinals, before eliminating Iwona Lodzik and Aleksandra Wolak 24-22, 21-17 in the semifinals.
Keith and Winkler road to the championship was a tough one. They came back from three match points against them in their match against the hard-charging Florida team of Chara Harris and Brooke Langston in the semifinals, finally advancing to the championship with a 16-21, 25-23, 15-13 win.
Saturday’s action also included competition in several other men’s and women’s divisions. Play concludes on Sunday with action on the co-ed 2-person and 4-person events.
Hosted by volleyball legend Karch Kiraly, the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball is the first national championship for open and grassroots beach volleyball players.
