Huntington Beach, Calif. (Sept. 23, 2007) --- Billy Allen, of Venice, Calif. and Janelle Ruen, from Newport Beach, Calif. outlasted the Hermosa Beach, Calif. team of Chad Mowrey and Tiffany White 30-14 to win the co-ed two-person Open Division Sunday in action at the inaugural U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball at the Huntington Beach Pier in Huntington Beach, Calif.
A team from Louisiana prevented a California sweep of the co-ed, winning the four-person co-ed Open Division. New Orleans residents Eric Boree, Scott Rauch and Traci Thompson joined with Chip Percell, of Baton Rouge, La., to defeat Zanda Bautre, Hermosa Beach, Calif., Meriole Boyer, San Diego, Calif., Martin Leikarts, Manhattan Beach, Calif. and Junior Lemire, Canada 21-12, 21-18 in the championship match.
Dan and Leah Wilson, of Costa Mesa, Calif. won the co-ed A Division and Chris Zelvis, Huntington Beach, Calif. and Lauren Glover, Santa Cruz, Calif. were the top team in the co-ed B Division .
Hosted by volleyball legend Karch Kiraly and presented by Corona Extra, the U.S. Open of Beach Volleyball was the first national championship for open and grassroots beach volleyball players.
